went to a folk concert at the museum of contemporary art the other day. it had been years since my last visit. going to the museum brings along those elements of total creativity and inspiration. emily lacy is a folk/country/filmmaker/everything else. her concert was held in the puck cafe there and it was really nice. if you're into folk music, you'd probably enjoy it & if not, that's ok...she has something for everyone. by the way, the museum is free admission every tuesday. so if you're in the chicago area, visit.

The Power of Patience

Our patience paid off.

We dated for a winter. It was real love. So powerful for both of us that we didn't know how to handle it. It got weird and she split in the spring. I didn't try to stop her. We were too young.

The next 8 years were self indulgent for us both. I thought of her sometimes, but it wasn't in the front of my mind because all that space was occupied with selfish thoughts. I dated plenty of other people. She dated plenty of other people. All of them were kept at arm's length. None of them mattered even though they thought they did.

Then we started talking again. She was still on the west coast; I was on the east. We got together for a weekend after all those years and it was more than we could have imagined. We simply hugged. The hug lasted for an hour. Her smell, her little moans, her skin, her lips, were all so reminiscent. It suddenly made sense why nothing had made sense for so long. We had truly found love before we were ready for it and now it had come back. So after a few more dates I asked her to marry me. She said yes before I finished asking.

We are so happy together. We both have a tremendous sense of pride for waiting and not settling. We have the kind of love that makes other people realize that they can do better. They can make themselves happy while making someone else happy too. We have the kind of love that books are written about and we feel so lucky to have led our lives in a way that nothing was done on a whim in our youth to fuck it up in the present. For us leaving it alone was the only way to save it, and now that it has come back around we are satisfied by how much we had to go through to get to here. This should be encouraging to everyone out there wondering if they have found it.

It may take longer than you want. The pain in the interim may seem unbearable. You may be tempted to settle on the way. You may think you have found it only to realize you are not sure. Outside pressure may push you in directions you are uncomfortable with. But, we are living proof that it does happen and it can happen to you too. Be strong and resilient. When it hits you it will knock you off of your feet and you will know that your patience paid off.

This hole in the wall is a historic Birmingham tradition that has some of the best greasy plate favorites in the city! I've always wanted to do a wall of frames in my home. I wasn't sure if there was some sort of theme I needed to model off of so that each frame would compliment one another. However, these photos I've recently encountered gave me inspiration that there are really no rules and to simply think outside of the box.

What a hip space to have while working the day job. Lovin' that Jimi Hendrix piece.

Here we have some black/white & color images with mostly black frames. What a difference a framed picture makes- this sleek and clean white space pops.

Love a loft space and look at that staircase with the little photos or magnets or both! Contemporary, yet modern.

Not feeling the framed pictures? Well, there are always mirrors.

Typical Mornings

Alarm goes off at 6:45am. I press the snooze button. Another 10 minutes go by and I snooze the alarm again. This goes on for about 30 minutes. I finally rise, cut the alarm completely off and head into the kitchen.

I boil water for my lovely cup of tea because that's all I pretty much have time for in the morning. After my shower, I put my makeup on while I think about what I'm going to wear to work that day. Unfortunately, I don't pick out my clothes the night before because I'm indecisive and well, very last minute too. :-)

While I'm getting dressed, I have the tv going, flippin' back/forth to the weather channel & listening out for the forecast or checking out the morning episode of the Wendy Williams show.

At this point, I'm checking my email or looking at facebook as well. Now I know I'm spending too much time doing this stuff; however, I manage to still make it out of the house on time. Since my tea should be at room temperature by now, I gulp that down, grab my phone and train card, make sure everything is turned off, take one more glance in the mirror...and I'm off! What's your typical morning routine?

Why Are You Still Single?

I am a statistic. And there are millions more like me. Forty-five percent of black women in America have never been married, compared with 23 percent of white women, according to the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey in 2006.

While there are some positive traits to the single life- come & go as you please, make your own decisions without having to discuss, take solo vacations or travel with your friends, cook for yourself, the toilet seat is always down, a ton of quiet time (no disagreements, etc.) & more. However, I see it this way: two heads are definitely better than one. I mean, who in life has accomplished their most important milestones/goals and did it alone? As I write this, I think about the women I know that are single and also the ones that are married. Many are in happy marriages and some..well, not so happy marriages. Some are expectant single mothers and some are single mothers.

This afternoon, I had a conversation with a friend of mine that happens to be a single mom, approaching 40 in a few years, and has never been married. "I feel sorry for black women," she said. I proceed to ask her why. "Because half of us are single. Some of us by choice and some of us who are ready to be in a relationship, ready to love, to be married, and live this life raising a family and not being alone." She had a point that is so true & unfortunately, has become an epidemic amongst black women.

Back in the day, the woman was in the home raising the family and taking care of the home front while the man was out working & bringing home the bacon. Balanced, right? Today, the woman has now entered the workforce, juggling being a wife, mother, and her career. These days, it's 50/50 as in both parties are bringing something to the table. The more the merrier, right? Besides, I believe this is a plus for a man who is seeking out his life partner.

Is marriage in the cards for the successful, career driven, holding it down on the home front, independent yet humble, nurturing black woman that would like to meet that special man, and build a relationship with the potential to marry? Can it happen in circumstances where it doesn't seem like it's ever going to? From experience, I'm told to stay in prayer, occupy your time with the things you love to do, nurture your existing friendships; however, there is still a void. I have become to accept the fact that I'm currently a statistic, and unfortunately, it is what it is.

So why is a beautiful woman like you still single you ask? I'm single because I haven't met a man smart enough to swoop me up. I bring great credentials to the table and it's unfortunate that I'm told, ''It's too good to be true. Something has got to be wrong with you," or "when does the mask come off?" Well, nothing is wrong and the mask will never come off because I'm me no matter what. What you see is what you get. I'm a great catch and until I meet the one, that special man, who realizes that without the loop holes what a rare & precious gift he's found, I will remain single. Is it worth the wait? Yes, indeed it is. It took a long while but I'm confident my time will come and so will yours.

-Still not good though..had a cinnanon roll from Sweet Mandy B's earlier

-Tried a vanilla steamer for the first time

-YUMMY!!

-I got my desk..wooooofreakinhooo!!

-Now I'll be up all night blogging, researching, and just plain ole' surfing

-Now on to decorating the living room

-I'm thinking a deep metallic purple accent wall

-With brown microfiber chairs & leopard pillows to go with

-Talk about royalty!

-Church was very nice--nite service that is

-They are just hidden and you have to seek out..reach out..for them lol

-I finally got dependable internet at home
-Up all nite catching up on my fave sites
-I think I want a pet
-A cat to be exact

-Love Pandora radio
-Church was the same to say the least
-My family always looks beautiful no matter what we're going through
-Grandma is doing much better
-It was good to hear her thoughts..heck just for us all to talk and discuss was good
-We should do that more often and without planning it

-Dinner is always good when you just order it up via drive-thru
-No Sunday nap time comes into play when you have a 3 year old running around
-I should go back to church on Sunday nite

While I was in the bookstore reading a magazine, I kept smelling this feminine fragrance that was soft and almost smelled similar to baby powder but a bit better. I flipped a couple pages forward, and voila! What I come to is Mariah Carey's Luscious Pink that came out a few months ago. While I'm not big on celebrity launches in perfume, I think this may just be the one that gets me into the mall to buy. I'm heading over to Macy's today!

The Beauty of Savannah

Had the pleasure of visiting one of my favorite cities in the nation...Savannah! It's been a few years since my last visit-so as soon as I arrived, I immediately remembered that there's so much beauty here in this best kept secret of the south!! When I was done with the makeup gig, I headed out to catch up on the latest and greatest of this historic town!

Took this pic in the car when I first got off the highway..so excited!

Dinner at Corleone's! Shrimp & Scallop Kabob over Garlic Penne Pasta...so yummy!

Bay St. which has restaurants, hotels, shopping...the infamous bridge that leads into South Carolina, and Broughton Street for shopping, eats, and theatre!
No matter where I'm visiting, I can never get away from my hometown, Chicago!

Who knew I would stumble across the #1 Marc Jacobs Boutique in the nation! Talk about lovely everything in this place! I was in shock & awwwe feeling like I had just stepped into a handbag museum..ha!

My homegirl in Ohio called me this evening raving about a new hair care product. Kinky Curly Curling Custard is a rinse out conditioner or leave in gel for thicker curlier hair types. She mentioned that frizz is non-existent when she uses it and you don't have to use it everyday because it lingers on & is flexible on styling. I was instantly sold! I sport a huge, curly fro yet sometimes I want to change it up. Will definitely be hitting up the salon this weekend to pick up what seems to be the answer to taking my tresses to yet another level!

A: Well, diva I'm so glad you asked...I have a lot of personal favorites both old and new..My first stop on a search for fabulosity begins at your local Walmart or Target supercenter:

Iman
Their foundations are amazing..They come in an array of colors from nutmeg to warm brown for Sisters of all hues, Clay, Earth and Sand...I use Clay 1

Lipsticks
Sheer Gold is my daywear lipstick Luxury Lip shine: in Glitzy...I use this amazing lip gloss for shimmer on hot nites, when I want to punch my lip color up a notch..Use alone or over another warm gold matte lipgloss for amazing shine

Cleansing Products
Garnier Nutrisse are the new products that I am addicted to. I use the cleansing towelettes for a 1 minute cleansing. No wetting or rinsing required; just sweep off your makeup (including eye gunk) and toss in the receptacle. Then I follow with the Deep pore oil free cleanser. It is fantastic, and is thick not greasy and heavy-duty enough to even remove stage makeup (for any divas out there who have a (ahem) "night job")..ok I'm leaving that alone...lol Last but not least, during the summer months I use the daily regenerating serum...during the winter months my skin becomes drier so I need that extra moisture and umph...I use the Regenerating night cream...and my skin feels as soft as a baby's bottom...

Black Radiance
How many of you had an older sister that used Black Radiance and Zuri products back in the day? Well I had older cousins that used these products when they were some of the first products made specifically for African American folks...you know back when Earth, Wind and Fire had just put out "Reasons"...ok thanks for that trip down memory lane..but alas, these old school favorites have re-invented themselves and they are hot, hot, hot...brand new packaging and I encourage you to check out the black radiance line of lip glosses..yum!

I've just started wearing eyeliner on both the top and bottom lids. Normally, I wear it on the top lid only; however, I have found that wearing on both lids with a neutral lip color & topping it off with some gloss to get that luscious shine is just darling for the cold winter months. I was freelancing with M.A.C. last night and was so inspired by their mechanical eye pencils. They are waterproof and lasted the whole evening. Oh, and it goes on like a dream! If you're visiting Atlanta, you have to grab a bite over at The Luckie Lounge. I had the opportunity of joining a friend in celebration of her birthday at this delicious kingdom. The menu consists of anything from burgers to filet mignon and sushi! I guess that's the reason they call it Luckie-cuz you're lucky to get all of this under one roof! The dessert menu wasn't shortstopping either..selections ranging from chocolate mousse to strawberry rhubarb pie and good house made cakes: carrot or coconut to name a few-yummy! Charm is also adjacent to Luckie, having a DJ lounge, magazine rack, and to-go options. Make sure you go and powder your nose because the bathroom is incredible! I never care too much about a restroom in a restaurant as long as it's sanitized, etc. but it is state of the art..you'll see!
